the new phoenix g (pg039) is an excellent deep and hypnotizing release. relying heavily on one shot chords and thumping vintage drum machines this is one for the bag. the a1 concequences is a real deep one with nice open hats and good places chords. a real open mix for the late / early hours. the b1 is a real vintage percussive slammer with nice one shots that together create a real oldschool vibe. the latin vocal in this track gives it a somewhat different vibe,really good for the dancefloor.the b2 is a dark peak time anthem. this will go off at any quality house evening. what a strange but wonderful vibe those rhodes in the middle are giving.true analog deephouse by mr.g

october and john osborn are proud to present the inaugural 12inch on their newly minted bristol and berlin based house & techno label: tanstaafl records. tanstaafl is an acronym for there aint no such thing as a free lunch. we kick things off with john osborns debut release, epoch 4 backed with a darker, reduced, dub-influenced version. john based in berlin worked with october in his bristol based studio to create and produce some wonderful, raw, dirty analogue house music. both tracks were meticulously produced by herr osborn and recorded and engineered by october. laurie appleblims joined the studio session and he dove straight into the juno 60 and played the melody that finnishes the track off. tough floor business for your feet and mind, tried and tested around the world. a great start for this promising label.

the eraly years of a decade are good times for exploration, just like in 1993 when we (alex & sasa) first started working together. we rented a huge loft space on ave b & 2nd st. in the east village in manhattan. the winter was tough, we had 16 snow storms and due to a landlord who hated everybody, we had our heating turned off except for a few hours in the morning, sometimes not even that... the only way to stay warm was to wear hats, gloves and scarves the whole winter... but that was fine because nightlife was a lot of fun. there was a good club/party every night. right below where we lived was one of the best after hour clubs called >save the robots<. but one of my favourite parties was >sugar babes< which was at the cbgbs gallery space right next door to cbgbs, every monday night. the dj used to sample parts of the records he was mixing and then just play the loop of the sample and alongside was a drummer playing to it. it was really inspiring. so we wanted to go back to this idea of sound assembly and create a new series for us to work with called >skematics< its like a diagram or manual to help understand the interconnections between the odd parts we find and assemble, an imaginary manual for a new decade that has not been musically defined yet

the debut ep from mysterious parisian techno duo, kartei, starts off with the renaissance style >lichtgarten<. in its unreleased state, the 15th century style arpeggio and driving beat already turned heads with appearances on some legendary legowelt dj mixes. sure to be a hit. check!
but that is not all, you get more bang for your buck. the record continues on with a modern track reminiscent of >hot on the heels of love<, and the heavy kicked aquatic space styled >transponder<. and that is just the a side. the b side is big room convextion/basic channel style techno and a gentle come down ambient track. fresh, classic sounding techno from france.

oakland based damon bell curates his first vinyl release with >kush musik wax<. damons productions are always rich with mood, swing, and depth. this release plays on damons archival tendencies as a dj leaning heavily on his influences of dub, jazz, and all things deep. the release starts off with damons much heralded >ezuku< which found its way onto the playlists of rick wilhite amongst others. >idiya< displays damons flair for arrangement as he twists the vibe midway thru landing you in a completely different space than the opening. >kymestry< is an uplifting deep house trip that brought a smile to the face of ron trent while at the deepblak studios. closing things out is label head aybee with a deep mid-tempo dub of >ezuku<.

breaking onto the scene via a series of anonymous 12inch, it was after garnering reverence as a big name producer in disguise that cottam was unveiled to be the humble newcomer paul cottam. rising through the early rave scene in his hometown of preston, he first cut his teeth as a dj warming up for the likes of surgeon, dave clarke and regis. despite his techno upbringing, it was the slo-mo tempos of mark e and the revenge that inspired cottam to produce his own brand of dusty soul and hip hop-grounded house. however, in april cottam returned to his roots with >sunrise sunset< on use of weapons, sinking a rave core down to his signature slung bpm. it is a journey into sub-aquatic acid house that began with a series of remixes for luv jam, pattern select and morning factory, and one that he continues to explore on his aus music debut. aptly titled >deep deep down< sculpts the feeling of acid techno into warm slo-mo house. ukrainian producer vakula takes the track off on another tangent entirely, stripping away its propulsive chugging heartbeat and replacing it with an off-kilter, spaced-out pulse reminiscent of theo parrish when he s in that kind groove. on the flip, >twang< is a return to cottam s brand of languid, soulful house, steeped with groove destined to incite the dancefloor shuffle.

the reinvigorated dfa imprint is back & joining them is mock & toof, a duo who have firmly established themselves as ones to watch. for this ep k-choppers starts things off in a slo-mo disco fashion on the a-side. brownbred carries the torch flipside with a latin percussive disco hit.

another superb love record filles with trancey atmospheres and epic breaks. this is one that will go off in the club at peak time. the a side is the ultimate banging club record that is both a very uplifting track and also a straight forward steamer. the flipside hot n old is a rather hard katy perry bootleg with a very mysterious intro that will leave you dazzled once the drums kick in. also this side is very atmospheric and trancey again. perfect for the winter, the roaring bass on this is enormous.

the first release sees the dj producer going head to head with bong ra in a collaboration that is just too much. it starts off with >the abominable<, a track that is insane in every way. heavy hardcore kicks combined with destructive jungle breaks is something only this duo can combine! sitting firm on the edge of hardcore, breakcore and dnb like only these 2 can. >bloodclot techno< is something totally different.. this one focusses more on the jungle/break core side of things but combined with almost terminator esque vibes. definably an epic production if there ever was one!

mr. mageeka makes a welcome return in the wake of >different lekstrix<, the mutated funky banger that caused straight up mayhem on many dancefloors the world over, upon its release via numbers last year. the much-anticipated follow up, penned for release on phuture shock musik, comes in the shape of >vintage malarkey<, which sees the east-londoner offer further next level shenanigans. employing a similar formula as its predecessor, this one is stripped down and quintessentially hypnotic - instantly luring you in with a looped god made me funky - esque groove, over a brisk swinging rythm, whilst occasionally throwing you off-guard through the introduction of angular synths and offbeat claps, as well as an inspired collage of samples that maintains the quirky nature of the production throughout. the single comes backed with >de congo<, a funky conga-laden number, that is enhanced by an addictive fusion of west african guitar licks, kalimba stabs and frisky percussion, though the real icing on the cake being its meandering trumpet hook, altogether coming off like a live high-life jam. early support from the likes of rinse fms scratcha and marcus nasty.

the next ep on germany s hello? repeat imprint comes from seuil, one of paris s most inspired underground producers. in terms of style, it is a match that could hardly be more perfect. hello? repeat has spent the past six years carving a niche for itself with eps from cabanne, audio werner and label co-founder daze maxim, plus acclaimed albums by bruno pronsato and kate simko. seuil, meanwhile, has put out a steady stream of ultra-deep 12-inches on labels like freak n chic and sammy dees ultrastretch. both specialize in a sound that is modern, understated and hypnotic. late call is exactly what its name suggests: a record made for the deepest, most tender portion of the night. the drums are slick and punchy, but the rest is woozy and romantic–this is one to put on when the crowd has stopped chatting and everyone s dancing with their eyes closed. topping it off is a vocal line made famous by diana ross but recited here by an androgynous diva: if you need me, call me, no matter where you are, no matter how far… dark, trippy and weirdly moving, this is one of seuil s finest tracks yet. >slow motion< strikes a similar chord but with a more subtle approach. here you notice seuil s rare touch for subtlety: in the absence of any real >hook<, he keeps the track moving with expertly sculpted drums, a warm half-melody and a gently propulsive beat. soft chords sustain in the background to create a balmy summer night feel. both tracks show seuil and hello? repeat doing what they do best: delivering something deep, functional and full of character.

neon dreams is the debut album from london-based producer and night slugs co-founder james connolly, aka l-vis 1990. across 15-tracks and 55-minutes, james distils a lifetimes worth of musical influences and experiences while conveying the story of the last 12 months in his life through vocalists samantha lim and javeon mccarthy. 2010s *forever you* single, which featured mccarthy, was a key jumping off point in establishing the overall vibe of neon dreams. the track features here as a slimmed down, 3.5 minute version. this length represents approximately the average track-duration across the entire lp, and is indicative of james long-held desire to proffer an album in very much the traditional sense of the term. further vocal turns come from co-founder of the sound pellegrino imprint and french hip-hop outfit ttc, teki latex.

as the us retire each of their space going shuttles it appears that exiting the stratosphere is more difficult than ever. yet there is one pilot who still makes aural excursions into the cosmos, roland sebastian faber. since the beginning of aube records rsf has been serving up his brand of analogue astronomy, creating lush interplanetary sounds and otherworldly vistas. the french voyager, across three 12 inches, has introduced listeners to his astral world, one of deep electronic tones, cosmic undercurrents and 70s electro disco passion. once more this moog veteran is setting off on a journey into the synthesizer stars.

copenhagens northern structures duo return on sonic groove with their second release entitled service & devotion . their debut release hit the scene with a strong bang. earlier this year you could not attend a proper techno event in berlin without someone dropping a track off their debut self similarity ep. djs such as ben klock, marcel dettmann , tommy 47, chris liebing , rolando & milton bradley were all playing it amongst any others. now back with their second release, northern structures follows up perfectly with three more songs of well crafted industrialized dark pumping techno. contemporary techno at its finest!

hot off the presses. we just got these in last nite from portland. this is our first real peak at body work, glass candys much anticipated third album. johnny & ida have been destroying clubs with both of these tracks for almost two years now. forever pushing forward into new ground from where b/e/a/t/b/o/x & 2010s feeling without touching left off, they candy coated this slice of analog glamour & sprinkled it with some stardust on top. lazer driven melodies bounce off electro primitive drums that would make moe tucker proud. idas crazy like a monkey & happy like a new year as she sings a call & response to the crowd. >warm in the winter< continues to unfold for seven plus minutes of shimmering percussive synth. the proto boogie b side >beautiful object< is so grimey it makes us think of bbbb s production on the first madonna album. the rhythms keep turning while future & past collide. johnny gives us the usual dosage of heavy bass & crisp handclaps. written & recorded in the icey montreal winter. mixed for all seasons.

hot off the heals of their debut >we hunt buffalo now<, the soft rocks gang dishes out >magic milk<, and utterly sleazy weekend dancefloor monster serving as the second single in the series surrounding their imminent debut album, >the curse of soft rocks<. guest vocals are once again provided by san francisco post-punk hero jorge socarras (vocalist of indoor life and songwriter for patrick cowley). remix duties on side-b are provided this time by washington dcs rising stars the beautiful swimmers. their mid-tempo coconut dub takes the percussive nuances that are deep in the original and made them centerpiece, surrounding it all with loose house instrumentation that oddly achieves a tropical vibe.

there is a certain dynamic that emerges whenever andre galluzzi and dana ruh pair up to create a record. with last year s >freya / mauersegler< split ep on ostgut ton, the two have already hit up some of the most prestigious labels in the electronic music landscape. tracks that are upbeat, driving, and, most of all, fresh have characterized their co-productions, which now have aras as a home. taking its cues from their label nights at berlin s panorama bar, galluzzi and ruh have solidified aras into an imprint based around expanding upon the creative energy that both share. their first release, >trambolla<, harmonizes each artist s approach into a grooving whirlwind that showcases their ability as producers as well as live musicians.starting off with the title track >trambolla<, the ep begins with tribal beats and infectious arrangements that seamlessly build upon each other along the course of the a-side. grooving from the start, it is the kind of track where the listener or the dj gets into the vibe right away. the percussion of >trambolla< especially stands out amongst the latin-tinged bongos, hi-hats, and hand claps that interchangeably come in and out of the track, a journey of its own at 9 minutes. >thelema<, the b-side, contrasts with the lightness of the a-side and demonstrates galluzzi and ruh s equal comfort in creating darker and heavily pounding tracks. the ten minute track grows out of a simple beat and growls ever louder as it takes in more intensity with its cascade of filters, delays, and booming bass. aside from the hard edge of >thelema<, it also provides a preview into the live set that the two artists are about to debut together.
